Theodores world is shrinking. He cares for his grandfather, Émeril, whose dementia is increasingly tethered to a cryptic wartime past. Outside, a record-breaking heatwave has turned Quebec into a pressure cooker of domestic rage and inexplicable public violence.

In the shadow of this heat dome, the horseflies have arrived: large, predatory, and unnervingly persistent. To understand the infection taking hold of the province, Theodore must accompany Émeril back to Grosse Île, a secret military base where, in 1942, a young entomologist was conscripted to develop the perfect biological carrier.

Moving between the experimental horrors of the 1940s and a contemporary climate in crisis, Mireille Gagnés novel is a visceral exploration of the predatory relationship between human violence and the natural world.

Arvustused

Inspired by historical facts, Mireille Gagnés new novel, Frappabord, at times takes on the appearance of a waking nightmare. Terribly disturbing, but furiously captivating.  La Presse

From the first lines, we are fascinated. The ecological threat has been lurking for decades, and whats more, it is told from the point of view of the species that we sought to transform. Disturbing!  Journal de Québec

Mireille Gagné has her own way of giving a voice to the nature that surrounds us, of illustrating its power as well as its richness And Horsefly does not seem to deviate from this line. With almost an action film feel, the novel promises to remind readers that we must listen to what the living is trying to say: balance is a state to be regained.  Le soleil

"Horsefly is an atmospheric novel that highlights the beauty and terror of Quebecs landscape, all while considering the past and future of all its inhabitants, human or otherwise." Kenna Clifford, The British Columbia Review

Weird, disgusting, and kind of greatakin to a modern Mary Shelleys FrankensteinThe result is a strange, uncomfortable, and compelling read. I blew through this one in about a day and highly recommend it. Brief Ecology Substack

"Poised somewhere between speculative and historical fiction, Horsefly elegantly reveals how limited our view of the future is if we cant investigate and excavate the worst chapters of the past." Emily Mernin, Montreal Review of Books

"A book with bite. Thought-provoking Quebec eco-thrillerlinks biological weapons, spike in violence." Keith Cadieux, The Free Press

Horsefly "moves at a brisk pace as it jumps from scene to scene, but it never feels rushed. Instead its a tight story where the tension starts simmering early and constantly threatens to boil overinto violence or sex, into something where blood is spilled."  Roz Milner, Ancillary Review of Books

". . . plot lines circle each other, the sense of danger will not be swatted away, and when the bite comes, it stings more than youd expect. Amanda Perry, Literary Review of Canada
