Im letzten Jahrzehnt hat sich Indien als vitales und innovatives Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst etabliert. Eine neue Generation von Künstlern reagiert mit Kreativität und intellektuellem Tiefgang auf die rasanten Veränderungen, die die globalisierten Städte der größten Demokratie der Welt kennzeichnen. Künstler und Künstlergruppen wie Rina Banerjee, Hemali Bhuta, Atul Dodiya, Sheela Gowda, Shilpa Gupta, Subodh Gupta, Jitish Kallat, Reena Kallat, Rashmi Kaleka, Bharti Kher, Ravinder Reddy, Vivan Sundaram oder Thukral & Tagra lassen sich im Chaos städtischen Lebens treiben oder suchen nach einer stillen, nach innen gewandten Lebensweise. Sie beschreiben die Träume ihrer Generation und decken soziale Konflikte auf. Since the 1990s, the Indian contemporary art scene has flourished strikingly, among others factors due to economical growth, tensions in the society and culture, new media and visual technologies. At the same time the Indian art scene has opened up in earnest to the global scene through exchanges, dialogue, travel, and collaborations across national boundaries. The publication India : Art Now shows how some of India"s most interesting contemporary artists are interpreting existence in the cross field between the local and the global.
