After a tragic loss, the surviving members of Susan's family are scattered across the globe, watching in horror as the empty generation rises up and battles for dominion over Earth, led by Mortimers puppet, the soulless Mandred.
Each of the family must undertake a journey of discovery to learn who, and what, they really are, and what part they must play in deciding mankinds future. One sets out on a quest to find a lost love: but finds much more when they meet the mysterious Mother in the frozen wastes of northern Canada. Another heads for Europe, where they rise through the ranks of a notorious organisation, facing enemies on every side. A third burns their way across America, on a dark journey of their own.
Guided by shared memories of the past, they take us to ancient Crete, discovering the astonishing truth about the Minotaur; eighteenth century Bristol, seeking justice for a murdered family; and the fogbound streets of Whitechapel, to face unspeakable evil. We even meet Alexander the Great's mistress along the way.
Ultimately, the family must reunite in the place where it all began to determine the fate of mankind. But which of them will prevail?
