Molz traces the influence of managerial concepts derived from both the public and the private sectors on the conduct of the nation's libraries. Private-sector businesses and corporations originated comprehensive rational planning, with its emphasis on efficiency and effectiveness. By contrast, public administration has been identified with an incremental and pluralistic managerial direction in which political processes dominate. Molz attempts to restore the balance between those aspects of planning that focus unduly on measurable quantitative forces and those that emphasize the qualitative and behavioral factors so often abridged in formal planning cycles.

Arvustused

...an extremely interesting book because it presents the tension between scientific method and intuitive thought ...in a cogent, readable manner...should be read by all library administrators and librarians interested in not only prescriptive management techniques, but also management philosophy. * Library Journal * Molz, one of our most precise authors, offers a text that is intelligently presented, well written, and easy to read and understand. * Wilson Library Bulletin * ...appealing and informative...highly recommended... * The Library Quarterly * ...worthy and useful... * Booklist * This slender volume is a pleasure to read, not only for its clear and graceful prose, but because it adds to our understanding of how libraries and other organizations manage and plan. * Journal of Academic Librarianship *

Redmond Kathleen Molz was the Melvil Dewey Professor of Library Service at Columbia University.
