This is a graded listening course designed for GCSE. It covers a wide spectrum of instrumental and vocal music from early times to the present day and is divided into sections entitled "beats and bars", "shapes and sizes", "chords and cadences", "groups and families" and "light and shade". The main musical elements are explored - melody, simple harmony and instrumental and vocal grouping - with illustrations given from folk, rock, jazz, barber shop, brass bands, Gilbert and Sullivan, synthesized sound techniques and classical music styles. The teacher's book provides answers to the exercises and tests and also gives notes and guidance on the course. A 16-page section of copymaster sheets to accompany the student's book is included and these may be photocopied for individual student's use. A cassette is also available which includes 70 listening exercises and 8 listening tests. It aims to provide complete coverage of the skills required for the examination. This is a Cambridge University Press publication from July, 1995.
