A comprehensive portrait of the Bauhaus artist’s work.

Known for his famous expressionist images of architecture, Lyonel Feininger (1871–1956) was a painter, graphic artist, and caricaturist who served as one of the original teachers at the Bauhaus school of design. In 1936 he immigrated to New York, where he worked until the end of his life.

This volume presents a full picture of Feininger’s work, featuring 140 paintings, drawings, caricatures, watercolors, woodcuts, and other art objects drawn from across the artist’s creative phases. In addition, the book includes previously unreleased photographs of the Bauhaus and excerpts from the diary of his wife, Julia, an artist who studied at the school. Contributions by an international group of scholars discuss the subjects and topics which characterized Feininger’s work, as well as lines of development in his art. In particular, his early paintings are evaluated alongside recent research into photography’s significance in his creative work.

The catalog accompanies a 2023 retrospective of Feininger’s work at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt.
