Maps of mountainous regions are the most beautiful maps. They become even more beautiful when you realize the effort that went into creating them. Traditionally, to create a proper map of a mountainous region, measurements had to be taken from at least a few mountaintops. The cartographers of the past were forced to climb these peaks, and thus naturally became explorers or even experienced mountaineers.
In Mapping the Mountains, author, geographer, and map enthusiast (and Dutch Mountain Film Festival team member) Andrew Davies recounts the most delicious of these adventures from the history of mountain cartography, richly illustrated with the relevant maps.
