A Radio 4 dramatization which was first broadcast as a serial from 10th April to 1st May 1994. Set in mid-19th-century Dorset, Hardy's powerful tale is the tragic story of a wealthy and impetuous man who cannot escape his past: drunk on rum at a country fair, he had sold his wife to a sailor.
