This graduate textbook uses dynamic material motion to convey continuum mechanics and material response. Examples from impact and penetration problems are used to illustrate solid mechanics. This first volume of two covers fundamentals of materials characterization, materials failure and elastic and elastic-plastic material response and intriduces penetration and impact problems.
