Vivien Ardleys book on her husband Neils life has been published by Jazz In Britain. Titled Neil Ardley: Kaleidoscopes and Rainbows, the book includes contributions from Dave Gelly, Neils musical colleague in the New Jazz Orchestra, and John Coles who knew Neil well and has written about his electronic studio. The book covers Neils entire life and all aspects of his various careers.

The cover has been specially created by David Macaulay the celebrated American illustrator who worked with Neil on The Way Things Work. The book covers Neils other life as an author of over 100 books on science, nature and technology. The hardback book is lavishly presented in full colour and illustrated with many previously unseen photographs and ephemera from Neils personal collection and other contributors archives. Vivien spoke to a number of people who knew Neil well when she was researching the book, and you can be assured its all based on first-hand experiences.

As an added bonus, the book includes two companion audio CDs, one of previously unreleased electronic music from Neils tape archive; the other of a previously unheard, early, Danish Radio Big Band recording of Neils New Jazz Orchestra arrangements. Detailed sleeve notes for each CD are included in the book and these CDs will only be available with the book and not sold separately.

Arvustused

For many years now its been hard to find much information about Neil Ardley let alone his full life story. How fantastic, then, that we can finally learn everything we want to know about this most talented, original and neglected of British jazz composers. This book is a treasure trove. JONATHAN COE, novelist and writer

When musicians laid the foundations of European jazz, composer/arranger Neil Ardley was one of the key architects. This biography chronicles the life and work of a significant (if underrated) figure in twentieth century music. JOHN L. WALTERS, musician, writer and editor (Landscape, Guardian, Eye)

This long-awaited biography-cum-scrapbook revealing the life and works of author and musical polymath Neil Ardley is a fascinating treasure trove certain to delight all jazz fans. Replete with hitherto unseen photos and comprehensive details of his astounding creativity, it's a fitting tribute to the man who gave the world Kaleidoscope Of Rainbows and much more. ROGER FARBEY, author of Elastic Dream

Ardley had two brilliant careers, which both produced results of lasting importance. This comprehensive biography, richly researched, profusely illustrated, and told with love, recounts how he managed (just about) to fit them into one remarkable life. JON TURNEY, Science Writer

I'm very happy that this biography of Neil has been written. The New Jazz Orchestra was an important part of the British jazz scene in the 1960s and 70s. Neil was one of the 'movers and shakers' who pursued his own musical vision. Amazing then, but perhaps not surprising to learn that he was also a polymath contributing to many scientific educational books. An interesting life! NORMA WINSTONE M.B.E.

While Neil Ardleys inspired arrangements and original compositions speak for themselves, Kaleidoscope & Rainbows paints an affectionate and intimate portrait of the man whose brilliance remains woven into the very fabric of British jazz at its most ambitious and adventurous. SID SMITH, Prog magazine.

VIVIEN ARDLEY was Neils partner for many years. She lives in Derbyshire and is spending her retirement researching and writing on local history and giving occasional presentations to local groups.

She hopes that this biography will go some way to promoting Neils music and keeping his memory alive.

Like Neil Ardley, the writer and photographer JOHN COLES is a polymath with a thirst for using his talents to explore all that life has to offer. In his time, he's been a theatre lighting designer, a noted professional photographer in the arts world, a designer / maker of fine furniture, an international radio journalist, an Erotic Artist of the Year, and the winner of an important digital media innovation award. Nowadays he divides his time between Wales and Cornwall, where he's writing a book about theatre lighting, and he's just about to publish his first novel.

DAVE GELLY writes about jazz in The Observer and other newspapers and journals. He has written and presented many features for BBC radio and for many years hosted a weekly Radio Two show. He was a leading writer on the Sony Award-winning ten-part BBC radio series Sinatra: Voice of the Century and is the author of several books, including Masters of the Jazz Saxophone (Miller Freeman, 2000) and Stan Getz: Nobody Else but Me (Backbeat 2002). He was named Jazz Writer of the Year in the 1999 British Jazz Awards. Dave Gelly was appointed MBE in the 2005 New Years Honours. His latest book is An Unholy Row: Jazz in Britain and its Audience, 1945-1960 (Equinox 2014)
