for SATB and piano or chamber ensemble
In this joyful Christmas work, Tarney sets the classic poem 'The Night Before Christmas', attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, and interpolates it with much-loved carols including 'Silent night', 'Good King Wenceslas', and 'We wish you a merry Christmas'. The piece may be accompanied by piano or chamber ensemble, and lively instrumental interludes and festive percussion such as sleigh bells and glockenspiel augment Tarney's strong musical characterization of the text. A fusion of the new and the familiar, The Night Before Christmas truly captures the magic and expectation of the season.
Oliver Tarney was introduced to choral singing at a young age in his Parish Church choir, and has been inspired by it ever since. Following a music degree at Manchester University and a Masters degree in composition, he is currently Head of Composition and Singing at Winchester College in Hampshire. He has written widely for children and adults, amateurs and professionals. Major works include his acclaimed Magnificat, recorded for Convivium Records, and a St Mark Passion, commissioned by the St Endellion Easter Festival. Oliver has worked extensively to promote singing in communities, choirs, and classrooms. He is passionate about inspiring others to find a love of singing.
