Researchers in communications, media, and other social sciences explore impediments to the free sharing of research results that the advent of the Internet promised. Looking in turn at global issues and at North/South issues, they discuss such topics as openness as a tool for acceleration and measurement: reflections on problem representations underpinning open access and open science, open/access: negotiations between openness and access to research, cooperative futures: technologies of the common in the collaborative economy, the contribution of the global South to open access, whether open science and open access are an opportunity for the global South or just another Trojan Horse from the North, and Ubuntu: a social justice pillar for open access in sub-Saharan Africa.
