Language transfer for the audiovisual media has, in the past five years, gained additional significance on two accounts: firstly, to make the evergrowing number of Europe-wide television programmes broadcast by satellite understandable to an audience of some 30 different languages; and secondly to allow for adequate market distribution sizes for the audiovisual industries of Europe, who find its linguistic fragmentation an increasingly severe obstacle in the competition with their American partners. The European Institute for the Media has since 1985 conducted a major research initiative to collect evidence and investigate the hitherto widely neglected field of language transfer for the audiovisual media. This volume is a comprehensive overview covering all main language transfer methods.
