"Past Chapters in Sheffield History" was written in 1918 by James Hayton Stainton, a local reporter. Supplemented by the author's own sketches, it gives an eye-witness account of the development of Sheffield High Street and of the new Municipal Buildings (the Town Hall) in latter half of the nineteenth century. Stainton also adds a biographical note about Sir John Brown, one of the leading figures in Sheffield at that time.This edited reprint adds annotations for the modern reader explaining and expanding areas which would have been familiar to the original audience. It also adds other illustrations from publications of the period, including local newspapers, and from the collections of Museums Sheffield.
