The World Health Organization estimates that pesticides kill one million people each year and that as many as 25 million agriculture workers suffer an episode of poisoning. In 1985 over three million tonnes of pesticides were used in agriculture and horticulture world-wide, and use is increasing rapidly in developing countries. There is now enormous pressure from consumer groups to minimize the use of pesticides, and yet the agro-chemical industry have arguments for their continued use in helping to maintain high crop productiuon levels.
