The most widely grown orchids in the world today are the species and hybrids of Phalaenopsis, the "moth orchids." Since their discovery by western botanists in the 18th century, phalaenopsis have been considered aristocrats even among orchids and were eagerly sought out by the most discerning - and wealthy - of collectors. With advances in orchid propagation and breeding in the middle 20th century, however, these orchids have become accessible and affordable to anyone with an eye for exceptional beauty. Few floriculture crops have swamped the marketplace as suddenly as phalaenopsis have in recent years, with millions of plants produced for the mass market annually; moth orchids have helped eliminate the misconception that orchids are temperamental conservatory plants meant only for the very rich.
Against this backdrop of change and ferment, Christenson has written a monograph of the genus Phalaenopsis. Focusing mainly on the forebears of today's omnipresent hybrids - the species - he always keeps an eye on the characteristics that species might bring to current hybridization programs. With extensive keys and detailed review of the taxonomy of the genus, Christenson has provided a thorough picture of the present scientific understanding of these plants.
This book offers a wealth of practical information for the orchid hobbyist in addition to its scientific content. A useful chapter on cultivation techniques is included, as is a chapter on hybrids in their many forms, shapes, and colors. More than 200 color photos and 60 drawings enliven the work and provide a fascinating visual overview.

A research taxonomist with a special interest in neotropical floristics and conservation provides a taxonomic update of the genus, last meaningfully updated by Herman Sweet's 1969 revision. Sponsored by the International Phalaenopsis Alliance, he focuses on species, also addressing characteristics that species might bring to hybridization programs. The book includes a history of the genus, summaries of the ecology and distribution of Phalaenopsis, and conservation issues. It contains extensive keys, line drawings, and plentiful color photographs. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Having spent nearly 30 years studying and working with Phalaenopsis, Christenson offers a timely monograph on phalaenopsis hybrids, which are doubtless the most widely grown orchids in today's market.
