This book presents the Production-Oriented Approach (POA) to teaching foreign languages, which has been developed by the author through several rounds of experiments over the course of the past 15 years. The approach has been proposed to solve the problem of the separation of input from output, which is pervasive in foreign language teaching contexts, and in this book the author illustrates the implementation of POA teaching procedures in terms of three phases: motivating, enabling and assessing. She explains the theoretical bases of the POA, including usage-based linguistic, sociocultural, second language acquisition and curriculum theories, and then presents a series of case studies of the approach in practice, including making a comparison of the POA with task-based and outcome-based approaches, highlighting similarities and differences. This book will be of interest to teachers and scholars in applied linguistics, modern foreign languages, language acquisition and language education.
