How do rebel groups decide how to recruit members? Obayashi classifies recruitment techniques of rebel groups into three main categories: coercion, inducement with reward, and inducement with task. He further asserts that their choice of recruitment method depends on the leader’s overall strategy in the context of military contest with the state.

This is the first book to examine the rebel-state contest over information. It uses a theoretical framework to interpret the issue of rebel recruitment. Important themes such as the role of information and intelligence, counterinsurgency strategies and civil war termination are also examined to further understand the dynamics of rebellion and violent disorder.
