This book reports on a three-year project conducted in Moscow and Kazan, which involved data analysis, examination of mass media discourse, and interviews with about 60 urban professionals, activists, academics, and others. The findings are arranged according to six socio-environmental and sustainability issues in Russian cities: air and water quality, transportation and mobility, energy consumption and efficiency, waste management, green and blue zones, and environmental governance and politics. The book concludes with strategies for promoting sustainable Russian cities. B&w charts and graphs are included. Contributors are affiliated with Kazan Federal University and the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Federal Research Center for Theoretical and Applied Sociology.
