For students, practitioners, academics, and researchers, Chadwick (Cardiff U., UK) et al. bring together 34 chapters in which an international group of specialists in philosophy, sociology, law, public policy, and the health professions discuss health care ethics as related to globalization, beginning and end of life, vulnerable populations, research ethics and technologies, and public health and human rights. They examine theoretical issues, professional codes, organizational ethics, privacy and confidentiality, informed consent, genetic counseling, health information technology, euthanasia and assisted suicide, abortion, reproductive technologies, advance directives, mental health, research involving children, orphan diseases, poverty and indigenous peoples, gene therapy and stem cell research, clinical telemedicine, nanotechnology, brain death and organ transplantation, environmental health, and pharmaceuticals. The SAGE Handbook of Healthcare Ethics is an influential collection of work by leading scholars on the fundamental and emerging themes which define healthcare ethics. This authoritative Handbook brings together experts with backgrounds in philosophy, sociology, law, public policy and the health professions and reflects the increasing impact of globalization and the dynamic advances in the fields of bioscience and genetics, which keep ethics at the centre of debates about the future direction of healthcare. Combining international and interdisciplinary perspectives, the Handbook provides a cutting-edge account of debates in five key areas:

  • Health Care Ethics in an Era of Globalization
  • Beginning and End of Life
  • Vulnerable Populations
  • Research Ethics and Technologies
  • Public Health and Human Rights

Arvustused

The SAGE Handbook of Health Care Ethics is a timely and important work. Too often health care issues are treated as if they are separate issues, disconnected from other areas of global justice theory and practice and divorced from the pressures of global governance and markets. This book is a welcome attempt to redress this gap. Heather Widdows, Professor of Global Ethics, Philosophy Department, University of Birmingham

This Handbook offers comprehensive coverage of the changing field of health care ethics. Providing both an international and real-life perspective on the contexts in which ethical debates occur, it will be invaluable to those interested in the field.
