This practical introduction is based on the author's own methods of presenting score reading. The emphasis is on 'keeping up' with the music, following the rise and fall in pitch, and interpreting details of the score. The book takes readers in simple stages from following a single melody-line to a position where they are able to read a full score, an extract from a suitable work, which illustrates various points made in the text. The book is accompanied by a cassette (prepared by Decca) of orchestral pieces and extracts which provide complete musical references, and a set of overhead projector transparencies. For groups which do not have easy access to an overhead projector, the book works perfectly well on its own as an expert guide to following and understanding a score.
