The way in which a cell maintains its total calcium content is a central issue in physiology. While the calcium level is to some extent controlled by intracellular mechanisms, it ultimately depends upon the rate of transportation of calcium ions into and out of the cell across the plasma membrane. The sodium-calcium exchange system provides a unique means of controlling calcium fluxes, thus playing a key role in many cellular functions, from muscle contraction to vision. The aim of this book is to introduce the reader to the role of sodium-calcium exchange in calcium homeostasis. Each chapter is written by a leading scientist and aims to provide a comprehensive review of a particular area in this important field. The text should be of interest to researchers in membrane transport, calcium regulation and cellular homeostasis.
