Mick Evans is a writer who takes risks. Never content to remain static, the voice is increasingly explorative, increasingly nuanced and possessed of a compassion that is also clear-sighted. The feel for language, the lyrical pulse, the acuteness of observation and the range and depth of references are signature features of Mick Evans' work. But with each new collection the reach is extended. There are poems here that unsettle or warn, that celebrate or remember, that surprise and delight, poems that make us laugh or wonder and always there is love not sentiment, not nostalgia, but permeable, authentic, love in all its shades of grief and joy.
Mick was born in London but grew up in Hertfordshire. He taught in Kent and Cheshire before moving to Carmarthenshire. The village in the Towy valley where he lives faces the hills above Llyn y Fan Fach and the site of the Bronze Age settlement on Garn Goch. Against this background urban influences and the forces of myth and history converge in his writing, combined with the resilience of nature. A winner of the Welsh Poetry Competition, he reads at open mic events in Carmarthen and Llandeilo. This is his third poetry collection with Cinnamon, previous titles being Burlesque and Light Airs. He has also written a collection of prose pieces, Short Cuts.
