Explores the relevance of second language research to teaching a foreign language in a secondary school classroom. Analyzes the concept of teaching and learning exclusively through the target language, and relates it to peer collaboration and learner autonomy, two current pedagogical tendencies. Taking England and Wales (a single education system) as a case study, integrates theory and practice within a standard educational framework that recognizes the impact of political decisions and socio-cultural influences on teaching and learning. Uses findings from the 1992- 95 Tarclindy Project, a study of target language use. Distributed in the US by Taylor & Francis. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
