Help children learn coping skills through literature! This book answers the often repeated question: Is there a childrens book I can read in my classroom to give children insight into significant life events? Literature ideas and activities help students cope with real-life situations, such as bullying, that interfere with school. This book will assist educators in guiding and nurturing childrens special issues and concerns with outstanding, ready-to-go reading and writing lessons. This professional resource for K-6 educators and parents uses literature with identifiable characters to help children who are facing challenges in their lives. Like bullying, peer acceptance, peer pressure, and being different, as well as family situations such as death, divorce, adoption, and sibling rivalry.

Arvustused

"When students are hurting it is difficult for them to concentrate on school work. To help, teachers and librarians often search for a book in which the characters are facing the same problems and meeting the challenges. This resource is for teachers, guidance counselors, and librarians to find lists of books for students affected by divorce, the death of a family member or a pet, bullying, or peer acceptance. This is not just a bibliography, however. In each section three books are highlighted. There is a short summary of the book, the recommended age range, words for review, and a number of lesson ideas. Listed with each lesson idea are the Information Literacy Standards by number, as well as the NCTE/IRA Standards for English Language Arts, also by number, that correlate. These are included in the sections covering each book as well as in chart format in the introductory section where the standards are listed in full. This book hits two goals: letting students with problems know that they arent alone and providing literacy lessons that are aligned to standards. Recommended." - Library Media Connection
