Hershock (Asia Studies Development Program at the East-West Center, U.S.), Stepaniants (philosophy and political thought, State U. of Humanities, Russia), and Ames (Chinese philosophy, U. of Hawai'i, U.S.) present 35 papers culled from the Eighth East- West Philosophers Conference, which was held in January 2000 and shared the title with this collection. The conference brought together scholars from 30 countries in order to examine "the tension between the forces of globalizing technology and resilience of the indigenous cultural impulse.
