Diseases of the liver and biliary tract are important and widely prevalent in the Third World. Their causes and treatments differ greatly from those in the West. Most of these digestive diseases in tropical countries are infective in origin, occur in a younger population, and are fairly advanced before the patient goes to a doctor. Thus expensive investigations are usually unnecessary, and treatment options limited. This textbook, written by two experienced doctors, takes all these factors into consideration to provide a proper perspective for Third World students of gastroenterology.
