Chinese-American novelist Jen identifies and describes what she believes to be a key difference in Chinese and Western approaches to narrative and proceeds to explore that difference through her own intellectual autobiography. That difference, she argues, rests upon the Western (and especially American) construction of the self as independent and individualistic versus the Chinese construction of the self as interdependent and collectivist. She characterizes her own novelistic career as embodying a dialectic "between consent and descent, which in my case is also a struggle between Emerson and Confucius." The discussion travels through consideration of her father's autobiography and how it represents the narrative of the interdependent self in China, studies in cross-cultural psychology, and, finally, her own work as a novelist.
