It was in 1983 that Smith's doctoral dissertation at the Juilliard School of Music was published to inaugurate the series. It has been quite successful for these many years, but he finds a new edition justified by his subsequent experience as a writer, and by new research on Franck (1822-90) in particular and 19th-century music in general.
