This book offers a comprehensive and practical overview of vitreoretinal surgery, blending foundational principles with real clinical experience. It explains the evolution of surgical techniques, the physical concepts that underpin them, the use of intraocular tamponade agents, and the essential considerations that guide safe and effective operative practice. Core steps of vitrectomy are presented with clarity, supported by detailed explanations that help readers build a strong technical understanding.
A wide range of diseasespecific surgical approaches is explored, including rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, epiretinal membranes, macular holes, and proliferative vitreoretinopathy, along with dedicated guidance for pediatric and adolescent cases. Rich case photographs and surgical images encourage readers to analyze real scenarios, apply their knowledge, and strengthen their clinical reasoning. Throughout, the book emphasizes the precision, diligence, and attention to detail that define excellence in vitreoretinal surgery, offering practical insight into how these qualities can be cultivated in everyday clinical and research practice.

Dr Zhaotian Zhang earned his medical doctorate from Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) in Guangzhou, China, in 2012. He subsequently completed fellowship training in vitreoretinal surgery at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, the national tertiary referral centre and consistently ranked as Chinas leading eye hospital. He now serves as a consultant vitreoretinal surgeon (adult and peadiatric retina), with a focus on advancing and refining surgical techniques in the field. Dr Zhang has authored more than thirty original research articles as first or corresponding author and wrote the textbook Vitreoretinal Surgery: From Basic to Mastery, published in Chinese by Peoples Health Publishing.
