Filling a gap he finds in the literature, Spring (history, Truro School, Cornwall) explores how the British forces performed at the operational and especially the tactical level. He draws somewhat on contemporary drill manuals and other military treatises, but found most useful the many diaries, memoirs, official letters, and private correspondence that British and German officers and enlisted men composed during and shortly after the war. The study has been revised and expanded from his Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Leeds in 2001. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
