Illustrated by superb electron microscope images, combined with detailed explanations in accessible language, this book delves deep into the world of pathogenic viruses: you will learn about their morphology, their ingenious ways of invading host cells, and how they exploit the machinery of infected cells to their advantage to replicate and spread on a large scale. This book draws fascinating portraits of viruses by highlighting major infectious diseases responsible for the great epidemics that have shaped human history, such as smallpox, Spanish flu, measles, influenza, rabies, AIDS, COVID-19 and many others... And even if some of these viruses are the cause of particularly serious diseases, you can't help but be seduced by the images and aesthetics of natural viral structures.

Translation of this updated and extended English edition of the book "Portraits de virus - Voyage au coeur des cellules", originally published in French by the Presses Universitaires François Rabelais (PUFR), was facilitated by artificial intelligence. The content was later revised by the author for accuracy.

Philippe Roingeard obtained a Pharm D (1984) and a PhD in Cell Biology and Virology (1988) at the University of Tours, Loire Valley, France, prior to taking on a position of Research Associate in the Department of Cancer Biology at the Harvard School of Public Health (1988-1991), Boston, USA. He is currently professor of Cell Biology at the University of Tours and hospital practitioner at the University Hospital in Tours. He is a member of the research team INSERM U 1259 Morphogenesis and antigenicity of HIV and hepatitis viruses in Tours, which he directed between 2006 and 2023. Philippe Roingeard was vice-President of the Scientific Commission Basic research on viral hepatitis of the French Agency for Research on AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and Emerging Infectious Diseases (ANRS-MIE). He is the author or co-author of 181 international publications indexed in Medline. His main research interests are the morphogenesis and pathogenesis of different viruses, especially HBV and HCV, and he is currently focusing its research on the development of a bivalent HBV- HCV vaccine. He has received several awards for his research on viruses: French National Academy of Medicine (2014), Fondation de France (2015), French National Academy of Pharmacy (2018).
