This is the first health education teaching manual to use children's picture books to teach nutrition and health concepts, grades 1-3. Theoretically sound, the 31 developmentally appropriate lessons help to promote health literacy.

The National Health Education Standards are used as a framework for the curriculum content, and multiple intelligences are used as a framework for the instructional methods. This book is an excellent model of curriculum integration because it maintains the rigor of health education content in the process of relating it to the language arts and other disciplines.

The book helps teachers to use children's picture books they already have in their classrooms for health education. It focuses on teaching several health-related concepts, such as moderation, variety, and serving sizes, while also teaching such concepts as energy, time, patterns, age, culture, behavior, and prevention. Teachers will learn to teach health education at the same time as they are developing literacy.
