Intended as a resource for undergraduates and beginning-level graduate students, this two-volume reference offers expositions on 99 carefully selected topics, in a manner that walks the line between the short explanations found in encyclopedias and the jargon-laden writing found in specialized journals. Each article is about eight pages and includes references. Arrangement is in six thematic sections, the first of which offers eight articles pertaining to the history of the discipline, postmodernism, neoinstitutionalism, systemism, rational choice, principal-agent theory, political psychology, and Straussians. Subsequent general themes are comparative politics, international relations, political science methodology, political thought, and American politics. This last section contains entries on the founding of the American political system, the media, judicial politics, interest groups and pluralism, state and local government, campaigns, and religion, among other topics. Indexing is in the second volume. The two editors are affiliated with the U. of North Texas and have extensive research and teaching credentials. Via 100 entries or "mini-chapters," the SAGE 21st Century Reference Series volumes on political science will highlight the most important topics, issues, questions, and debates any student obtaining a degree in this field ought to have mastered for effectiveness in the 21st century. The purpose is to provide undergraduate majors with an authoritative reference source that will serve their research needs with more detailed information than encyclopedia entries but not so much jargon, detail, or density as a journal article or a research handbook chapter.
