Britain isnt big. Not in the way that swallows you whole. But it is complicated. Its coastlines curl in on themselves like unanswered questions; its roads unravel through forgotten towns and sudden, startling views. And if you want to understand this island, its contours and contradictions, its silences and its stories, you could do far worse than to let public transport take you there.

Michael Eversden, born in England and raised on tea and sarcasm, left these shores for a career in music across the North Sea in Holland. He remained away for more than forty years and has now returned to circumnavigate mainland Britain. The route follows the edges and the in-betweens: from Cornish cliffs to Highland coasts, from faded seaside glamour to once-mighty industrial heartlands.

Part travelogue, part memoir, this is a story of landscapes and lives, of memory and rediscovery. Britain seen from a seat by the window, through the eyes of someone coming home.
Michael Eversden grew up in London in the early 1960s and from a young age had a passion for music studying bass trombone at the Royal College of Music. In 1980, having become a professional musician, he took on the bass trombone position with the North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, a post he held for over forty years before eventually returning to rediscover the country he had left behind.
