Applied Clinical Toxicology is organized into four sections that explore the fundamental principles of toxicology, chemical and environmental toxins, as well as drug toxicity commonly encountered in healthcare settings. The primary aim of this book is to educate health sciences students on the principles of clinical toxicology. Additionally, it seeks to equip healthcare professionals with the advanced knowledge and skills necessary to assess, diagnose, and manage cases of poisoning and overdose. Laboratory findings are also incorporated throughout. After introducing the foundational concepts of toxicology, the book presents the toxicity of both medication and non-medication agents in distinct sections. Each chapter includes discussions on specific toxic agents, their sources, typical routes of exposure, mechanisms of action, and signs and symptoms of poisoning, including delayed presentations. The management of poisoning is addressed in detail, covering the general approach, methods to reduce absorption, enhance elimination, and the use of antidotes when applicable. The text also examines antidotes, as well as the pharmacology and toxicology of toxic agents and household products. Clinically-oriented case studies, emphasizing clinical presentation and treatment, have been carefully crafted for each topic to reinforce and illustrate the information discussed. Furthermore, each chapter contains review questions designed to help readers assess their understanding of the concepts presented.
