A new, more accessible translation of one of the most important philosophical works of the twentieth century

Martin Heidegger’s seminal work Sein und Zeit (Being and Time) is an exploration of the founding conditions of our being in any world, and of the varying revelations that allow for radically different experiences of things. But the very originality of the work, and the relentless stream of neologisms that Heidegger used to express concepts for which philosophy had no vocabulary, make the book a daunting read. This translation by Cyril Welch, classroom tested for more than twenty years, is far more readable than previous versions. It includes explanatory footnotes, as well as a translator’s preface that sets out Heidegger’s overall purpose and strategy in this complex and essential work.

Arvustused

Cyril Welchs accurate and elegantly written translation of Heideggers Being and Time provides the best available English translation of this difficult work. It makes a welcome contribution to the interpretation of Heideggers thought and of twentieth-century philosophy more generally.Jeffrey Andrew Barash, author of The Politics of Historical Interpretation: Reflections on Ideology and the Perplexities of Political Myth

Cyril Welchs translation of Being and Time is a remarkable achievement. Welch has avoided the palimpsest of linguistic obfuscation that plagued earlier translations, while remaining true to the colloquial flavor of Heideggers German. At long last, English-speaking readers have at their disposal a lucid and readable translation of Heideggers 1927 masterpiece.Richard Wolin, author of Heidegger in Ruins

Martin Heidegger (18891976), one of the most original and important philosophers of the twentieth century, spent most of his career at the University of Freiburg. His work deeply influenced many of the schools of modern philosophy, including existentialism, phenomenology, deconstructionism, and postmodernism. Cyril Welch is professor emeritus of philosophy at Mount Allison University, New Brunswick, Canada.
