Binge eating consists of episodes of uncontrollable overeating followed by compensatory behavior, such as purging, fasting, and heavy exercising. This book collects papers from around the world on factors contributing to binge-eating, such as dissociation and impulsivity. It examines the frequency with which binge eating occurs in multi-ethnic populations and different ages, and the differences in frequency rates as a function of gender and identity. The distinction between binge eating and bulimia nervosa behaviors is explained, and the association between emotional abuse in childhood and future binge eating episodes is examined. The effectiveness of certain treatments for binge-eating are described, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), and combined treatment.
