In sixty-seven exquisite watercolors and drawings, nationally famous architect Eugene Aubry captures on paper the sensibilities, the memories, and the grace that evokes Galveston, especially for those who are BOI (born on the island). Commissioned by the Galveston Historical Foundation, these works of art are intended to enhance the visual record of the buildings and the unique local architectural style that so many have appreciated over the years.?

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, Galvestonians became more aware than ever of the treasure of the islands historical architecture and the vulnerability of this heritage to forces beyond human control. Aubrys art captures the almost palpable sense of past glories these buildings bring to mind. Aubryhimself BOIhas fashioned these pieces in a way that resonates with those who love the islands ethos.

With a fine eye to the artists intent and a mastery of detail, architectural historian Stephen Fox expertly and eloquently introduces the work as a whole and, in discursive captions that accompany each image, informs the readers appreciation of Aubrys art.

So much more than a tribute, Born on the Island: The Galveston We Remember stands as a loving homage to Galvestonone that will call its readers home to the island, even if they have never ventured there before.

Arvustused

I find the drawings to be deeply appealing and evocative of the place and its architectural history. . . Fox shows how Aubrys drawings take us back to the earlier periodwhile yet maintaining the historical sense of change, the human ways of conversion of the old buildings to new purposes and needs and the natural decay, both the slow and steady erosion enacted by continuous moisture and salt air and the sudden ruination delivered by hurricanes like Carla and Ike.--Jimmie Killingsworth, author, Going Back to Galveston

|"... addresses the history of the architect as a 'Born on the Island' artist, the unique history of Galveston, and the background to the preservation of its extraordinary collection of Victorian architecture ... Fox and Aubry are each masters at what they do, and this book is a most fortunate collaboration...."--David G. Woodcock, professor emeritus of architecture and director emeritus of the Center for Heritage Conservation at Texas A&M University
