CHARACTERLESS is a literary novel set in Kolkata, following Ankit — a quiet, emotionally open young man from a Marwari family — through three significant relationships across roughly a decade of his life.Shailey is his first, a married woman who fell for him during a professional assignment. Their connection blurs into something they shouldn't have pursued, discovered through a borrowed phone. It ends in burning words and unresolved guilt.Pari is the emotional core of the novel — a childhood classmate he reconnects with online. Their love unfolds entirely across distance: messages, phone calls, two imperfect meetings. She never fully commits, eventually marries someone else, yet they keep finding their way back to each other. Three nights together — years too late, circumstances all wrong — become the most complete thing Ankit ever experiences.Kanishka is the woman he marries while still in love with Pari. She loves him genuinely and completely. He cannot return it in kind. The marriage deteriorates, ends in separation and divorce.Throughout, Ankit carries a label — characterless — dropped on him by his elder brother after one of his failures is discovered. The novel asks whether that word is a verdict or simply the easiest stone available to throw at a man who loved too completely, too carelessly, and without adequate armour. The author presents no clean resolution, only continuation — and leaves the final judgment to the reader.
