This book, now in an extensively revised second edition, is a complete reference for all clinicians who are interested in incorporating into their daily practice the techniques available to reduce the duration of orthodontic treatment and overcome other treatment limitations. The opening chapters describe the new concepts in biology of tooth movement, the biological principles of current accelerated techniques at the molecular and cellular levels, and introduce guidelines on how to select the best acceleration approach based on each patients needs. New chapters have been added describing how age and individual variability can affect the rate of tooth movement. Clinicians are then introduced to micro-osteoperforations (MOPs) as an efficient approach to increase the rate of tooth movement. They will be guided step by step through the application of MOPs, case selection, and treatment planning, and learn how MOPs can be incorporated into daily mechanotherapy for the treatment of different malocclusions. The book is written in simple and clear language with many illustrations and clinical examples to facilitate understanding of concepts and procedures. In addition, it is a rich source for academicians and researchers interested in a comprehensive and updated review of theories of tooth movement and accelerated orthodontic techniques.

Dr. Mani Alikhani, DMD, MSc, Ph.D., is a Professor and Dean of CTOR Academy, and faculty at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and The Forsyth Institute (Boston).

Dr. Cristina Teixeira, DMD, MSc, Ph.D., is Professor and Executive Dean of CTOR Academy, and the former Chair of the Department of Orthodontics at New York University College of Dentistry (New York).

As collaborators, their research focus on craniofacial skeletal form, growth and adaptation, tooth movement, and bone and cartilage response to mechanical stimulation.  They are co-founders of CTOR (orthodonticscientist.org), a state-of-the-art research and education center dedicated to translating scientific advances in Dentofacial Orthopedics and Orthodontics into clinical applications to improve patient care. Their research work, supported by NIH and different international research foundations, produced many patented innovations in clinical orthodontics. Dr. Alikhani and Dr. Teixeira serve as reviewers for several scientific journals and are editorial board members of PLOS ONE, Seminars in Orthodontics, Frontiers in Craniofacial Biology, Journal of Tissue Science & Engineering, Orthodontics and Craniofacial Research, and Innovation. They have co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and books including the Mechanotherapy in Orthodontics book series.  Dr. Alikhanis clinical focus is to treat severe skeletal and dental deformities in patients seeking non-surgical treatment. Dr. Teixeiras clinical expertise is in early interceptive Orthopedics treatment.  As clinicians/scientists, they use advanced biological and mechanical concepts in their daily clinical practices. Dr. Alikhani and Dr. Teixeira have private orthodontic practices in New York and New Jersey.
