This work is for students and educators in education, social sciences, and history, as well as social activists, therapists, clergy, counselors, social workers, and general readers. The editors, one black and one white, collect brief first-person stories by white men and women around the world, highlighting how whites have been hurt by separation of the races and racism against non-whites. Each story is preceded by brief background on the writer's world at the time of the story. The stories are organized around themes of separation, guilt, shame, silence, and resistance and freedom.
