This book is written with the student in mind. It contains a collection of carefully selected problems and detailed solutions in Solid State Physics which can served as a self-study guide for undergraduate students of Physics, Engineering and Materials Science. The transfer of knowledge gained from lectures to problem-solving is not straightforward for many students. Owing to the increasing number of entrance and scholarship examinations conducted at many major universities throughout the world, and the rise of online help centers, the author felt that there is a growing need for such a text. Entrance examinations usually consist mostly of numerical problems.Core concepts for each topic are presented concisely yet comprehensively while keeping the mathematical details to a minimum. The book provides just the right level of theoretical details so students can follow the steps that are contained in the solutions. Topics include: crystallography, x-ray diffraction, crystal dynamics, free electron theory of metals, semiconductors and superconductors. The abundance of illustrations throughout the text will help in visualizing some three-dimensional concepts.
Upindranath Singh is Emeritus Professor of Condensed Matter Physics at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados, and has taught Solid State Physics for over two decades. He is the joint author of the instructor's solutions manual for the text: Physics: Principles with applications (1991). He obtained his PhD in physics from the University of Delaware, USA (1986), and more recently (2022), an advanced degree in Nuclear Science and Engineering from the University of Bristol, UK. His research areas include the study of phase transitions in liquid crystals and polymer/liquid crystal blends by using several experimental techniques including light scattering, DSC, x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and polarized light microscopy. His present focus is in the area of electrospinning which is a technique that is used to generate polymer nanofibers.
