This commentary on Paul's Epistle to the Romans is indebted to the fundamental changes in the interpretation of Paul that took place in recent decades: It shares the general reorientation concerning Judaism and profits from the developments in our understanding of ancient Judaism.The comment addresses the biographical background of the Paulinian theology and the situation of the Roman Christians informing the epistle. It pays particular attention to the points of contact with Roman culture, against which the Apostle and the various Christian groups in Rome had to bear witness to the gospel. The commentary reads the Epistle to the Romans not as a pedagogical treatise but instead analyzes the rhetorical function of the individual sections as part of specific goals of the epistle as a whole.
