"This edition highlights the latest development in the identification of pathogenic prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms causing illnesses in humans. Recent advancement of molecular diagnostic techniques has resulted in significant improvement in the diagnosis of diseases as well as in its control and prevention. The importance of rapid and sensitive detection methods for the correct identification of pathogenic microorganisms isolated from clinical and routine environmental surveillance samples, outbreaks, sporadic cases, food products, drugs and cosmetics of public health safety is now recognized. The emergence of new technologies in recent years, that involves multi-disciplinary approach (such as bacteriology, parasitology, virology, microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, genetics, genomics, epidemiology, biochemistry, biophysics, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, statistics, mass spectrometry, nanotechnology, etc.) in the field of biomedical sciences, has improved vastly and provided various detection methods, with remarkably higher resolution for the rapid and accurate identification of pathogenic microbes. Nevertheless, there is a continual need to have additional sensitive diagnostic methods that can be used in the rapid detection and differentiation of emerging infectious pathogens (including bacteria, viruses, fungi and molds, protozoan parasites) of public health importance"--

Infectious diseases are caused by the pathogenic microbial organisms. These microbes can multiply and can cause an infection, once they enter the body. Infectious diseases are transmissible, and may cause mild to life-threatening illnesses. It can be airborne, waterborne, foodborne, and soilborne. It can be spread through direct contact (human to human, animal to human). It has also been one of the leading causes of human deaths. Therefore, there is a need to have rapid diagnostic methods to prevent and control these diseases. This book titled “Diagnosis of Pathogenic Microorganisms Causing Infectious Diseases” will help the scientific community to understand the transmission dynamics of some infectious diseases of public health importance.

Dr. Irshad M. Sulaiman has been involved in the area of biomedical research focusing on the control and prevention of human-pathogenic microorganisms for over three decades. He obtained his PhD from Delhi University. Dr. Sulaiman joined the U.S. CDC in 1997, and worked until 2008. Since 2008, he is with the U.S. FDA. He has characterized a large number of emerging infectious pathogens isolated from various sources of public health importance. He has developed several novel molecular diagnostic methods, described several new species and genotypes, and published 95 peer-reviewed manuscripts.
