This book explores the life, work and careers of two lovers of marine biology and protists, Edouard Chatton (1883-1947) and his exceptional pupil André Lwoff (1902-1994), later a Nobel Prize winner. Offering descriptions of their discoveries and explanations of their artistic talents, it also presents (annotated in numbers for the first time) the beautiful educational course boards made by Chatton for his students and collaborators. This book will appeal to scientists, biologists, parasitologists, researchers, teachers, and students, and is a tribute to these two great scientists.
Marie-Odile Soyer-Gobillard, PhD, is Honorary Emeritus Research Director at the French National Center for Scientific Research. A cell biologist and protistologist, she studied free and parasitic protozoa, planktonic dinoflagellates, at the Laboratory Arago at the Paris 6 University, France, and served as a Researcher at the National Center of Scientific Research from 1961 to 2000. From 1975 to 2000, she was Head of the research team "Genome and Cell Cycle of Unicellular Eukaryotes" at the Ocean Observatory at Arago Laboratory of Banyuls-sur-mer, France, as well as Chief of the Center of Electron Microscopy at the same institution. Her research focuses on cellular and molecular protist studies, and she received the Paul Wintrebert Foundation Prize in 1974 and the Trégouboff Prize of the National Academy of Sciences in 1988.Joseph Schrevel, PhD, is Honorary Emeritus Professor at the National Museum of Natural History, France. A protistologist and parasitologist, he studied parasitic protozoa at the University of Lille during his doctoral studies, and was the first chair of Protistology at the National Museum of Natural History. He is a Knight of the Legion of Honour, France, and Officer of the Palmes académiques, and the author of 190 publications on the biology and systematics of protists.
