This volume focuses on the role of soil-structure-interaction and soil dynamics. It discusses case studies as well as physical and numerical models of geo-structures.  It covers: Soil-Structure-Interaction under static and dynamic loads, dynamic behavior of soils, and soil liquefaction.  It is hoped that this volume will contribute to further advance the state-of-the-art for the next generation infrastructure as a key to creating a sustainable community affecting our future well-being as well as the economic climate. The volume is based on the best contributions to the 2nd GeoMEast International Congress and Exhibition on Sustainable Civil Infrastructures, Egypt 2018 – The official international congress of the Soil-Structure Interaction Group in Egypt (SSIGE).

Prof. Deepankar Choudhury is Institute Chair Professor of Civil Engineering department at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Mumbai, India and Adjunct Professor of Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) of CSIR laboratories (connected to CSIR-CBRI Roorkee) of India. Always first class first rank holder and Gold Medalist throughout academics in BE (Gold Medalist) from Jadavpur University Kolkata, India in 1997, ME (Gold Medalist) from IISc Bangalore, India in 2000 and PhD (with Best PhD Thesis Award from Indian Geotechnical Society for years 2001 and 2002) from IISc Bangalore, India in 2002, Prof. Choudhury also worked as a faculty at IIT Kanpur, new IITs at Gandhinagar and Dharwad (both on deputation from IIT-B) and as a Visiting Fellow/Faculty at NUS Singapore, UoW Australia, UC Berkeley USA, Kagoshima Univ. Japan, TU Darmstadt Germany and Incheon National Univ. South Korea. Prof. Choudhury is the only Geotechnical Engineer of India who is an elected Fellow (FNASc) of the oldest Science Academy of India, viz. The National Academy of Sciences, India.

Dr. El-Zahaby graduated from the Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University (Egypt) in 1985 with honors. He obtained his M.Sc. from Cairo University in 1989 and his Ph.D. from Civil Engineering Department in North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC (USA) in 1995. Upon graduation, he joined the Housing and Building National Research Center (HBRC) as a research assistant and was promoted in different positions. He is currently the HBRC Chairman. Dr. El-Zahaby is the recipient of the 2013 ICC Global Award of Atlantic City, NJ (USA) and has been a geotechnical consultant for almost 30 years. He is currently serving as an assessor for geotechnical consultants in Egypt. Dr. El-Zahaby is also the Principal Investigator of a research project funded by the STDF (Egypt) and NSF (USA) on the assessment of seismic hazards on wind turbines.

Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at the University of California at Davis(UCD) and independent consulting geotechnical engineer, currently residing in Santa Fe, New Mexico,USA. His areas of teaching, research and practice are: geotechnical earthquake engineering; soil mechanics and foundation engineering; earthfill and rockfill dam engineering; and numerical modeling. He joined the faculty at UCD in 1989 following 20 years at Woodward-Clyde Consultants in San Francisco, Santa Ana and Oakland where he was a senior Principal. He was a member of the teaching and research staff of the geotechnical engineering group at the University of California at Berkeley from 1967 through 1975. He retired from the faculty position at UCD in July 2004.
