The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries saw a marked increase in the availability of elementary and grammar education in Europe. In France, that rise took the form of a unique blend of trends seen elsewhere in Europe, ranging from Church-dominated schools to independent schools and communal groups of teachers. Lyon, long a crossroad of ideas from north and south, was home to a particularly interesting blend of approaches, and in this book Sarah Lynch offers a close analysis of the educational landscape of the city, showing how schools and teachers were organized and how they interacted with each other and with ecclesiastical and municipal authorities.

Arvustused

"This book, focusing as it does on elementary and grammar education both institutionalized and informal in the French city of Lyon, is of particular interest, not only because of the richness of its documentary sources, but also because it concerns a topic in a location which promises deeper insights into late medieval schooling and education ... The author has produced a work of considerable originality, taking us significantly further in our understanding of elementary and grammar education in France than we have travelled hitherto." - Hedwig Gwosdek, Journal of Medieval Latin Volume 30, 2020 "The archival material for schools in Lyon is limited and so this study has often had to rely on evidence from many other French towns and regions, but as a result the picture of pre-university education that emerges here is wider than a local monograph might otherwise have presented." - Robert Black, University of Leeds - History of Education (2019)
