The alliance between the United States and its Nato partners has been strained severely in recent years. Ethics & European Security (1986) develops a broad understanding of the problem of European security and American backing based on Christian ethics. There are disagreements and differences of emphasis among the contributors but they have in common the view that an exclusive preoccupation with the military dimension is damagingly one-sided. Instead the contributors argue that moral and theological concerns are a vital part of the politics and mechanics of European security and must be incorporated in any effort to devise new policies for security in Europe and the West.
