Scholars of education and researchers and instructors in various fields contribute 16 papers from an October 1996 workshop in Maastricht. Funded jointly by the European Commission, which promotes the competitiveness of its member states, and the United Nations, which seeks to assist growth and sustainable development in the developing nations, the workshop investigated whether the two objectives could be pursued independently now that the world has been reduced to a globe. The topics include quantifying the globalization of information processing work, breaking the logic of spatial work organization in telebanking, Europe and developing countries in the emerging on-line education market, and distance education in Latin America at the technology cross-roads.
